Veneers Q&A

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin shells of porcelain or composite resin that Dr. Dorfner bonds to the front of your natural teeth. Veneers improve the appearance of your smile by changing the size, shape, and color of your teeth.

If you chip a tooth, you might only need a single veneer. Even so, Dr. Dorfner usually recommends between four and ten to allow for a more symmetrical and attractive smile

What types of issues can veneers correct?

Dental VeneersAt Dorfner Dental Studio, Dr. Dorfner uses veneers to correct minor cosmetic imperfections, including:

  • Worn-down teeth
  • Chipped or fractured teeth
  • Misaligned or uneven teeth
  • Pointy or unusually shaped teeth
  • Visible stains

You might also benefit from veneers if you have teeth with gaps between them.

What does getting veneers involve?

At Dorfner Dental Studio, getting veneers takes three visits. One for an initial consultation and two to make and apply the restorations.

First visit

During your first appointment, Dr. Dorfner conducts an oral exam, asks about your goals, and takes a series of oral X-rays. She uses the information collected to determine if you’re a good candidate. If you have healthy teeth and gums, she makes a second appointment to prepare your teeth.

Second visit

At your second appointment, Dr. Dorfner administers a local anesthetic and prepares your teeth to receive the veneers. She removes a thin layer of enamel from each of your teeth and takes a series of impressions. Dr. Dorfner then sends your impressions to a dental laboratory that makes your veneers.

Third visit

When the lab completes your veneers, you return to Dorfner Dental Studio for your third appointment. Dr. Dorfner lines up the veneers with your teeth, bonds them in place, and polishes them. Then, she provides care instructions.

How long do veneers last?

Veneers typically last an average of 12-15 years*, but it’s possible to extend their lifespan. Dr. Dorfner recommends:

  • Brushing your teeth twice daily
  • Flossing your teeth before going to bed at night
  • Avoiding bad habits like biting your nails or opening packaging with your teeth
  • Visiting the dentist once every six months for an oral exam and professional cleaning

If you participate in extreme sports like mountain biking or skateboarding, consider wearing a mouthguard. A mouthguard can reduce the risk of chips, cracks, or other damage.
