Integrating Invisalign® into Your Daily Routine

Invisalign® ® clear aligners are a popular cosmetic dental treatment for straightening teeth and enhancing your smile. Knowing how to take care of your aligners and your teeth is important to get the beautiful results you want. At Dorfner Dental Studio, we advise our Invisalign® patients in Burlington Township, NJ on the best way to integrate treatment into their lives.

Your Morning Routine

Because you should wear your Invisalign® braces at least 22 hours a day, you will sleep with them in. When you wake up, remove your aligners and give them a gentle brush and quick rinse. Make sure to remove them when drinking coffee and eating breakfast. Then brush and floss your teeth like you normally do and put them in.

Daily Care

It’s best to only drink water while wearing your aligners. Coffee, tea, and other drinks can damage your teeth over time and stain your aligners. Do not chew gum with Invisalign® braces in your mouth. Always rinse your aligners when you take them out and put them in their case to avoid losing them or accidentally throwing them away.

After you eat, make sure to brush your teeth to remove any food particles. If you’re unable to brush your teeth after eating, rinse your mouth thoroughly and put them back in. Failing to clean your teeth before putting Invisalign® back in can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath.

Bedtime

Before bed, clean your aligners again and brush and floss your teeth. You can also soak your aligners using Invisalign ™ Cleaning Crystals or denture cleaner. These can remove plaque and keep your aligners and Invisalign® retainers clean and free of unpleasant odors. Do not soak your aligners in mouthwash, as it can stain them.

Although your dentist will give you several sets of aligners that you change about every two weeks, they will also want you to come into the office to check your progress every 12 weeks. The average time for Invisalign® treatment to be completed is 12-18 months but can take longer if you don’t wear your aligners often enough. Invisalign® discomfort levels are typically mild and short-lived, often described as slight pressure when switching to a new set of aligners. When treatment is finished, your Invisalign® dentist will give you a custom-made Invisalign® retainer to keep your smile looking great.

Enjoy Your New Smile

Once you incorporate Invisalign® braces into your routine, you’ll find that it has a minimal impact on how you go about your day. Using this discreet clear aligner system also enables you to avoid the irritation of metal brackets and wires. You can remove them for special occasions, photographs, and eating. The small changes you make and the effort you put toward caring for your aligners and your teeth are well worth achieving your ultimate goal of a healthy, beautiful smile.
