Teeth Whitening Q & A

Teeth Whitening

A white, healthy smile can give your self-confidence a boost and enhance your oral health.  At Dorfner Dental Studio, we offer professional-grade in-office teeth whitening and take-home teeth whitening trays for adults and teens. Dr. Dorfner is proud to offer the most effective whitening system on the market, the KöR whitening system.

What Is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening is a safe, non-invasive cosmetic dental procedure that can produce dramatic results and whiten teeth several shades. The revolutionary  KöR whitening system uses Hydremide® Peroxide technology to eliminate stains and make teeth brighter and lighter.

Why Do Teeth Become Discolored?

Your teeth naturally change color as you age. Daily activities like biting and chewing cause enamel to wear down, revealing more of the yellow dentin underneath. Other factors that can cause discoloration and staining include:

  • Consuming beverages such as coffee, tea, soda, and red wine
  • Eating colorful foods like tomatoes, berries, and spinach
  • Smoking, vaping or using chewing tobacco
  • Taking certain medications, such as tetracycline
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Dental trauma

Take-Home Teeth Whitening Trays

First, we take digital impressions of your teeth so your trays will perfectly. Then the trays are sent to the KOR Whitening Lab. Once they are fabricated, you’ll take them home and use them with a medical-grade whitening solution. The bleaching gel is easy to apply, so you don’t have to worry about how much to use or deal with messy application.

While some people prefer to wear trays overnight, you can also use them for several hours any time during the day or evening. Depending on the degree of discoloration and the whitening results you wish to achieve, you may wear them every day for two to eight weeks.

In-Office Teeth Whitening

After the initial two weeks of At-Home whitening, should you want that extra boost, KOR offers an in-office whitening treatment. In-office teeth whitening can make your smile up to eight shades lighter in a single appointment. After preparing your mouth with a special shield that protects gums, Dr. Dorfner applies the bleaching gel to your teeth. The KöR system whitens without the need for special lights or lasers.

Are The Results Of Teeth Whitening Permanent?

The results of teeth whitening treatment aren’t permanent, but with good oral hygiene and regular cleanings, the effects of whitening can last 6-12 months. Quitting tobacco, drinking dark beverages through a straw, twice-daily brushing and daily flossing, and regular visits to the dentist for checkups and cleanings can help keep your smile bright after teeth whitening. Using whitening toothpaste and mouth rinses can help combat staining as well.  You can also “touch up” your whitening occasionally using take-home trays with whitening gel.

Does Teeth Whitening Cause Sensitivity?

Teeth whitening can cause tooth sensitivity for some patients. However, the KöR whitening system includes desensitizers that can help prevent sensitivity. Brushing with a toothpaste such as Sensodyne Pronamel a few weeks before and during whitening treatment can also help ease discomfort. If you have very sensitive teeth, talk to Dr. Dorfner about your options before using any teeth whitening system.

How Does Whitening Affect Dental Restorations?

Crowns, bridges, implants, veneers, bonding, and composite fillings do not whiten with bleaching treatment. We do however, recommend any new dental restorations to be completed after whitening your teeth so the new restorations can match the newly whitened teeth.

Is Teeth Whitening For You?

Generally, patients with healthy teeth and gums are good candidates for whitening. Children under the age of 14, patients who are allergic to peroxide, and those with gum disease, extreme sensitivity, and other serious dental issues should not whiten their teeth.

If you have a significant amount of dental restorations that would result in uneven whitening, you may want to consider veneers, bonding, or crowns to achieve a better aesthetic result. During your teeth whitening consultation, Dr. Dorfner will discuss which cosmetic dental treatment may work best for you.
